Dr. Travis

Dr. Travis is an educational leader who is passionate about helping others and elevating the consciousness of her community. She has over 28 years of direct experience in the educational field.  She has performed multifaceted roles such as Teacher, Special Education Department Chair, Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant Principal, Behavior Coach and most recently, Administrative Dean. She earned National Board Certification by returning to teach at her neighborhood junior high school.  To her knowledge, she was the first and only Special Education Teacher to achieve the accomplishment at Brownsville Middle a Title I School. 

Dr. Travis studied Special Education, Clinical Teaching and Diversity at the University of West Florida where she earned her Doctoral degree. She earned her degree as a single parent of two young children while in service in public education schools. Dr. Travis has been responsible for the provision of special education services for hundreds of students. She has provided her unique insight to both parents and teachers.  She continues to share her unique experiences and fresh perspectives to guide and empower others. She is an educational specialist.

Dr. Travis prioritized her personal growth and spiritual development as she struggled to overcome oppression.  She accepted the responsibility that was inherent with her roles as parent, student and teacher.  As she gained knowledge, she gained skills that contributed to greater self determination.  Because she made informed decisions, actively pursued her personal goals, aligned her education with her own desires and needs, Dr. Travis successfully navigated the educational system.  She feels successful and shares her skills. There was a time when she felt debilitated and overwhelmed by her reality. While studying multicultural teacher education, she analyzed educational ideologies and structured inequality. She analyzed the impact of race, class, gender and sexuality to theorize her role as a Black woman and educational leader. She drew from the well of Black Feminist thought. Dr. Travis constructed the Afro-feminist Dramaturgical perspective to articulate how leadership roles are socially constructed and how diversity initiatives are often created to reinforce oppression itself.

 

Dr. Travis is a first generation scholar that is dedicated to civic innovation while providing stability and security for her family.  As founder of A Special Treasure Consulting and Coaching LLC., she supports others as they assume responsibility for analyzing their particular roles and experiences.  She assists others by helping them to find meaning, significance and take control. Dr. Travis has earned a reputation for  her understanding of oppressive educational practices, facilitating self empowerment, advocating on behalf of individuals with disabilities,  and supporting others in underserved communities. Dr. Travis is a relational educational leader that helps others to understand themselves and their capabilities.  Those who are mentored are more likely to actively pursue their goals and take responsibility for their actions.  Colleagues, parents, and students testify that they experienced greater satisfaction and overall well-being while working with her. Dr. Travis has transformed her life as a result of aligning her thoughts, feelings and actions with her highest and most authentic self.

Dr. Travis has recently assumed a new role as an entrepreneur.  She seeks opportunities to rediscover herself and utilize untapped potential.  She continues to live from her soul and redefine her role. Dr. Travis is an Educational Leader, Life Coach, Mentor, and Inspirational speaker. Her goal is to help others fulfill their potential and live a purposeful life. She is committed to providing a safe and supportive space for others to explore their personal journeys and heal.  She shares her knowledge and develops curriculum while leading as an example and teaching others to thrive.

  Dr Travis wrote, "If I stand tall it is because I stand on the strong backs of many." Dr. Travis thrives due to the many women who never stopped working and supporting their families while dedicating time to helping her survive.  She recognizes the impact of strong, Black women.
